Why is food waste a problem?

Discover the impact we’ve had on our planet.

Our impact.

Producing food requires resources such as land, energy and water. According to WRAP, approximately 25-30% of all food produced is lost or wasted; if food waste were a country, it’d be the third largest emitter of greenhouse gas emissions (after China and the US). Our vision is to create a world where no surplus products go to waste. Over our 50 years, we’ve supported hundreds of thousands of individuals and communities through accessible food and life changing development programmes. And by partnering with businesses to help reduce food waste, ensuring it’s being used as original intended, we’re helping to reduce the amount of harmful emissions that is generated from waste in landfill. We’re committed to helping deliver the UK’s Courtauld Commitment 2030, delivering on UN targets for food waste reduction and greenhouse gas emission reduction (associated with consumption of food and drink), creating a more sustainable future. Discover the impact we’ve made so far working with our industry partners, in our latest impact report.
Together we can create a world with less waste. As part of the Biffa group, we’re helping create a circular system that stops unnecessary waste and creates financial, social and environmental value. Our mission is focused on redistribution, but as part of Biffa, we can make much more impact.
