Community Shop provides affordable food and household goods helping people facing food insecurity to buy quality food at deeply discounted prices. Alongside the store it also has a Community Hub which offers life-changing personal development programmes and a Community Kitchen which brings the community together and serves free kids meals every day.
Community Shop Athersley, located at Lindhurst Road, opened at the end of October 2016 and has since provided over 52,000 free meals to kids, delivered 10,598 kitchen programmes and 16,125 hub programmes.
The anniversary was celebrated with a community party, with extra meals laid on and birthday cake to celebrate the ongoing successes of the store.
Regional Community Wellbeing Manager at Community Shop, Hollie Higgins, says: “We’re delighted to have welcomed thousands of people from across the local community into our store over the last 10 years, helping them save so much on their shopping. We’re really proud to be part of the Athersley community and it was great to see so many people come together to celebrate our 10th birthday. Thank you to everyone who has supported Community Shop Athersley since we opened.”
By selling surplus products in the Community Shop it is able help ease the strain on household budgets and reinvest the profits directly back into the community, helping people to learn new skills and engage with other people across their local community.
