UK’s leading food redistribution supermarket opens new store in Edinburgh

An innovative supermarket that prevents good food and household products from going to waste, has opened its doors in the city for the first time. Company Shop Edinburgh is the second store of its kind in Scotland and follows the successful launch of the discount supermarket chain in Renfrew, in December last year.
Company Shop Group, the UK’s leading redistributor of surplus food and household products, will open its latest store on Dumbryden Road, Edinburgh, on Wednesday 23rd September. Over 20,000 members are set to reap the benefits of accessing deeply discounted products with up to 50% off the normal retail price, helping to stretch hard-working family budgets whilst protecting the environment by reducing unnecessary waste.
Company Shop Group works with major food manufacturers, retailers and brands across the UK to stop food and household products from unnecessarily going to waste. It does this by purchasing surplus food and consumer goods from household brands such as Marks and Spencer, Nestle, Iceland and Tesco before redistributing the products at discounted prices to members.
All the food sold within the store will be in date and perfectly good to eat but is deemed ‘surplus’ and may have otherwise gone to waste due to incorrect or wonky labelling, seasonal packaging or overstock – amongst many other reasons.
Membership is free and is now open to anyone in Scotland who works in the NHS, emergency services, care workers and the fast-moving consumer goods supply chain, with individuals who qualify encouraged to sign up on the website to access the benefits.
It is expected that the store will benefit 24,000 local members in its first year, while creating 80 new jobs for the Edinburgh area. Alongside welcoming thousands of new members to the Group, Company Shop is also encouraging local manufacturers, retailers and brands to get in touch if they are looking for sustainable surplus solutions for their products.
The opening of the Group’s second store in Scotland follows the rapid expansion of the pioneering redistribution model in recent years, with more stores in the pipeline for 2021 as part of its sustainable investment strategy.
“We are delighted to be opening our second Scottish store in Edinburgh this September, following the successful launch of our store in Renfrew last year. Edinburgh is an area with a thriving food manufacturing industry and hard-working families who will benefit hugely from accessing discounted products in our stores which might otherwise have gone to waste.
“Our model helps businesses to reduce waste, protect the planet, feed hard-working families and support communities. We are hugely grateful for all the support we have received so far, including from our long-standing retail partners, members, local organisations and the wider community.
“We would encourage people to sign up for membership as soon as they can, so that they can reap the benefits as soon as our doors open, and we are also keen to work with more organisations in Scotland to help them unlock the potential in their surplus products.” Jane Marren, Managing Director of Company Shop Group
